Loosely based on the Qing-dynasty novella anthology Pai An Jing Qi, the 2002 costume drama shapes the engrossing tales into an over-the-top detective story with a comedic spin. Alec Su, who portrays young county magistrate Hang Tiesheng is sent to investigate a series of mysterious deaths, the rookie mayor-cum-detective must call upon his wits, fists, and a range of special gadgets in cracking several tough cases, one of which involves an assassination attempt on the Emperor! Fortunately for Hang, he is aided by his sassy stepmom, a wacky lieutenant, and a cute kung fu girl, but the pesky prince just won't make life easy for them.
