Shin Dong Wook (born Shin Hwa Shik) is a South Korean actor. He was born in Seoul and graduated from Kukmin University. His cousin is singer Kim Ki-bum from the K-pop group Super Junior. His acting career began in 2004 with his first supporting roles in the KBS2 dramas Oh! Pil Seung & Bong Soon Young and If You Only Knew.
Shin Dong Wook rose to fame for his leading roles in the 2006 dramas Soulmate and Cloud Stairs, and after his role in War of Money the following year, he was also awarded the 2007 SBS New Star Award. He has been out of the public eye since 2010 when he announced he was discharged early from mandatory military service upon diagnosis of a rare condition, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), a chronic disease that causes extreme bouts of pain without a known cause or cure.
In 2016 he published Writing, Space Journal, a novel about a man in a space elevator construction project that drifts into the galaxy. After rehabilitating to a level of maintenance with his pain management, he made his comeback with the 2017 MBC action drama Lookout in a supporting role.
