Hui has appeared in about 25 films, and currently, his popularity is fluctuating with the moderate success of both his onscreen performances and his music career. He is best known for his (often) style of romance like a prince.

Hui is considered one of the most successful Chinese music celebrities, with an extensive list of Cantonese and Mandarin hits to his credit. His first music contract came in 1986, and his singing career reached stellar status in 2001 as he won awards of the most favourite male singer.

In 2004, Hui was named as one of the 'New Four Heavenly Kings' along with Hacken Lee, Leo Ku and Edmond Leung which would be replacing the once lustrous title awarded to Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, Aaron Kwok and Leon Lai. His mentor, Anita Mui has worked hard to impart her impressive singing ability on him and would not have painstakingly done so had he not have the conviction and talent to succeed. He was credited for being a hardworking artist.

In October 2005, Andy was declared one of Ten Outstanding Young Persons where his hard work on his music and film career, and his excellence in commitment to the community was recognised.

Hui has many friends in the showbiz, including: Sammi Cheng, Eason Chan, Edmond Leung, HOCC, Anita Mui, William So. Many of his friends know him by 老鼠 (Mouse) or 老鼠安(Mouse On), others call him "安仔" (on jaai/On Kid)

After dating his assistant, Sai Lo and former model, Michelle Ye, on March 7 2011, Andy Hui announced to the public that Sammi Cheng and him have started dating again. Their relationship started in 1990 and ended in 2004, after spending 7 years apart, they have decided to give each other another chance.
