A popular female fortune teller, Inaba Marie, is murdered, and the client list found at the scene has the names of political bigwigs. Kano Rintaro, Asawa Naoki and the members of the Ninth Sub-division begin investigating. The first person to discover the murder is determined to be the daughter of some Diet member but Hayasegawa Masumi, the medical examiner, finds an unexpected connection between the fortune teller and Asawa. Masumi places more emphasis on conversations with the dead rather than with living human beings and Kano.
