The film is based on the life of a samurai named Nakamura Hanjiro who was involved in the Meiji Restoration along with Saigo Takamori and other prominent men. Set during the waning days of the Tokugawa shogunate, it depicts Hanjiro’s rise from a low ranking samurai to one of Saigo’s most trusted men due to his generosity and excellent swordsmanship.
